2016 Averitt Lecture Series

Well-known Southern garden, floral and interior designer James T. Farmer, III, will be the featured speaker at the 2016 Averitt Lecture Series event to be held at the Emma Kelly Theater on Sunday, March 6th at 3:00 p.m. Farmer is the author of the Wall Street Journal best-selling garden book, A Time To Plant, and other titles including Sip & Savor, Porch Living, Wreaths For All Seasons, A Time To Cook, Dinner on the Grounds, and A Time to Celebrate.

A self-described “complete designer,” Farmer specializes in a very natural garden-to-table and farm-to-table aesthetic in landscape, floral, interior, and special event design and decor. Also well-known as a Southern chef specializing in family recipes, cooking adds yet another dimension to Farmer’s creativity.

A graduate in horticulture and art history from Auburn University in 2005, Farmer chose the two majors which complemented what he always wanted to be when he grew-up. From an early age, he wanted to be able to design a great living space with a functional and resplendent garden, to throw a great party, to cook a great meal, and to enjoy the Southern lifestyle instilled in him by his parents and grandparents on the family farm in Hazlehurst, Ga. Farmer went straight to work after graduating, opening his own business. People immediately began to call on him for his design expertise. Many remembered him from helping them in their gardens when he was 12-years-old.

Farmer has been described as “A skilled and entertaining speaker, he is truly a young and fresh voice for his generation. Whether he’s teaching how to plan the perfect summer picnic, using everyday items to create exquisite tabletops, creating drop-dead gorgeous flower arrangements and wreaths, or making his grandmother’s skillet peach pie, Farmer masterfully guides his audience through the art of elegant garden living.”

Farmer is now a well-known guru of all things Southern. In addition to his popular AllThingsFarmer.com blog, he is an editor-at-large for Southern Living magazine, and a popular guest on national television and radio shows. You can view some of Farmer’s designs and read more about him at www.JamesFarmer.com. Farmer’s books are available through www.Amazon.com and www.BooksAMillion.com.
